International Environmental Education Day 2025: ISEC Cameroon (Team Yaoundé) Celebrates with Environmental Education Outreach
Published on January 26, 2025
In celebration of International Environmental Education Day, the International Student Environmental Coalition (ISEC) Cameroon in Yaoundé organized an inspiring outreach campaign at Bright Morning Star Industrial and Commercial College in Mewoulou, Yaoundé 6 subdivision. This initiative aligns with ISEC Cameroon's mission to educate and empower young people to become proactive environmental stewards in their communities.
This outreach, the first in 2025 for ISEC Yaounde is part of Green Earth Initiative, our flagship environmental education program, dedicated to equipping students and young people with the knowledge, skills, and tools they need to drive meaningful climate action in their communities across Cameroon
Why Environmental Education Matters
Cameroon faces significant environmental challenges, including pollution, deforestation, and climate change. These issues demand urgent action and a well-informed population committed to sustainability. Recognizing the pivotal role of youth in driving change, ISECCameroon team in Yaoundé designed this outreach campaign to equip students with knowledge and practical tools to make sustainable choices.
Our Objectives
The main goal of the outreach was to raise awareness among students about environmental pollution and climate change while encouraging them to take meaningful action. Through interactive presentations and hands-on activities, the campaign aimed to instill eco-responsible habits and inspire students to contribute to environmental preservation.
What We Did
On January 20, 2025, at 7:00 AM, ISEC Yaoundé team members, Mr. Levi Zame and Ms. Cecile Bih, led engaging activities, which included:
Environmental Awareness Sessions: Students learned about the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a focus on climate action, in a fun and interactive way.
Creation of an Environmental Club: An exciting new club was formed to keep the momentum going and encourage students to lead sustainability initiatives.
Climate Storytelling: Students explored how storytelling can be a powerful tool for climate advocacy and raising awareness.
Waste Management Initiative: Two waste bins and paper bags were donated, and a plastic bottle collection point was set up to promote better waste disposal practices.
Educational Materials Donation: A banner illustrating the SDGs was handed over to the school for display, serving as a daily reminder of sustainability goals.
Positive Outcomes
Our outreach achieved remarkable results:
Over 200 students sensitized on climate change and its effects.
A new environmental club was successfully launched to continue sustainability efforts.
Improved waste management practices were introduced to the school community.
Students gained a better understanding of climate action through interactive discussions.
Challenges Faced
Despite the success, the team faced a challenge with the limited time allocation from the school administration
To improve future initiatives, we recommend:
Engaging schools earlier to allow for extended sessions.
Expanding outreach to multiple schools to increase impact
Environmental education is the foundation of a sustainable future. By empowering young minds with the knowledge and skills to address climate challenges, we are shaping a generation of leaders who will champion sustainability, advocate for policy change, and implement solutions that create lasting impact. The actions we take today to educate and inspire will determine the health of our planet for generations to come
ISEC Yaoundé remains dedicated to fostering environmental consciousness among Cameroon's youth. Through initiatives like the Bright Morning Star outreach, we continue to empower students with the knowledge and tools they need to take meaningful action in the fight against climate change.
Join us in our mission to create a greener, more sustainable future for all!
